III. Brief of TAIWAN POWER COMPANY
Taiwan Power Company (Taipower ) is a sole government-owned
utility in Taiwan. The history of Taipower could be retrieved to Ching Dynasty.
In 1888 a bureau was set-up for supplying electricity to the metropolis Taipei.
During 1896-1945 Taiwan was under the sovereignty of Japan. Taipower was expanded
to supply electricity for the whole island of Taiwan. After World War II, the utility
was run by the government of ROC and named Taiwan Power Company.

IV. The Development of Nuclear Power in Taiwan
As early as in 1955, Taipower steered into nuclear power generation as
a major part of its long-term power development project.
In 1979 the First Nuclear
Power Station with 2 units each of 636MW was completed.
In 1985 the total capacity
of nuclear power comprising 6 units in 3 sites reached 5144MW. It was the year nuclear
generation reached its highest share of 52% to the total generation. The period
between 1981 and 1990 was the nuclear dominant age in Taipower.
Although more than
97% of the energy resources are imported, Taiwan's electricity price is lower than
that is in Japan. The price of electricity had not been adjusted for more than 20
years. Even beyond imagination, if adjusted by consumer price index, the electricity
price in 2001 was as cheap as 92% of the price in1996. Due to nuclear power has cost
superiority, it makes tremendous contribution to Taipower's revenue. But unfortunately,
nuclear does not get the deserving appreciation from the public
V. Status of LUNGMEN Nuclear Power Project
In order to maintain a balance between electricity demand
and supply, Taipower launched its fourth nuclear power project. The project is to
install two ABWR on Yenliao site located at the Kung-Liao village, Taipei County,
on the northeast coast of the Island.
The project was scheduled to complete within
60 months. But due to suspension , political issues and material price rising, the
project schedule was revised 3 times. Now the construction period is about 10 years.
Its completion rate as of Dec.2007 was about 74.8%.
